The aim of a recent review was to investigate if a novel class of sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) would benefit patients with diabetes mellitus and heart failure (HF) and to assess its mechanism of action.

The findings suggested that despite the variable clinical profiles, patients of HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) should be managed according to the guideline directed medical therapy, irrespective of their diabetes status.

Evidence suggests that SGLT2i is beneficial for diabetic patients at high risk of HF. Recent studies depict that SGLT2i could further reduce HF-related hospitalizations or cardiovascular mortality and improve the quality of life of diabetic and non-diabetic HFrEF patients under optimal care.

In fact, SGLT2i expands the efficacy of HFrEF therapy. Cumulating evidencesupports the reduction of hospitalization due to heart failure for DM patients treated with SGLT2i. This agent also aids in reducing HF-related hospitalizations and improving quality of life of patients with and without diabetes.
