The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) stated that regular aspirin intake for preventing primary cardiovascular disease was not necessary for people aged 60 and above. It also stated that anyone aged between 40 and 59 who has a 10-year CVD risk of 10% or more should consult their doctor before starting aspirin.

Experts in India believe that the benefits of the medicine aspirin much exceed the hazards in several circumstances, and intake of daily low-dose aspirin helped in the prevention of heart attacks and strokes by making the blood less sticky.

Dr. Ashok Seth, chairman of the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI), stated that Indians were at a higher risk of heart disease and stroke than the western population. Hence, adopting USPSTF guidelines created for the US population may not benefit Indians, and the statement issued in the Journal of the American Medical Association should be reconsidered (JAMA). According to him, people with a previous history of heart attack or stroke, those who have undergone angioplasty or bypass surgery, and those who are regularly taking daily aspirin should keep taking it.

Dr. Mohit Gupta, professor of cardiology at G B Pant Hospital, also remarked that western guidelines should not be blindly followed. However, the unnecessary use of aspirin to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people over 60 with no other risk factors should be avoided. In younger patients, it should be tailored to their needs.

Dr. K K Talwar, the chairman of the PSRI Heart Institute, stated that low-dose aspirin is only recommended for patients at very high risk and not for routine primary prevention.

According to Dr. Ambuj Roy, professor of cardiology at AIIMS, low-dose aspirin may be required in a small number of people with elevated calcium on CT, and low-dose aspirin has a very limited impact in preventing primary cardiovascular disease.
