Epidemiological data recommends that approximately 80% to 90% of youngsters suffer from acne vulgaris and nearly 30% of them need treatment. These inflammatory acne lesions can result in acne scars, which although curable, may have an unfavorable psychological influence. Acne can be characterized as mild, moderate and severe, while acne scars as atrophic and hypertrophic.

Despite the existence of several hypotheses regarding the pathogenesis of acne scarring, it remains unclear.

A recent study discussed the phytoconstituents-loaded nanomedicines for the management of acne.

Different electronic scientific databases like Web of Science, Elsevier, Science Direct, Springer, PubMed, Google Scholar, etc. were searched to extract the relevant studies while additional data were taken from textbooks, local prints and scripts.

It was found that nanotechnology-based nanomedicines enhance the efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapeutic agents for acne.

To illustrate, the phytoconstituents are natural compounds extracted from plants and are vastly employed for their anti-acne activity. The anti-acne activity of the phytochemicals arises by modulation of the cytokine signaling pathways.

Loading phytoconstituents as a drug in nanocarriers like emulsion, niosomes, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) and nanocrystal can improve the topical treatment by enhancing their therapeutic profile and reduced toxicity.

Thus, phytoconstituents with anti-acne potential and phytoconstituents-loaded nanomedicines have been widely used in recent years due to their high treatment potential in the management of acne.
