According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association, the COVID cases among children have surged by 50% in the last week with the total case count reported as 93,000, for the week of May 6-12. This weekly rise of 50% broke the declining trend of COVID cases with the lowest total reported as 25,915 at the beginning of April.

The regional distribution of 93,000 COVID cases was fairly even with the Northeast reporting the biggest jump of the week along with the Midwest with the numbers around 25,000.

On the contrary, South and West stated the lowermost number of cases, i.e., 20,000 and 18’000 respectively.

Overall, 13.2 million cases have been reported in the United States, with pediatric cases representing 19% of the total cases reported. The CDC has reported 12.7 million cases of infection in children aged 0-17 with 1,536 deaths so far. The CDC has also reported that the rate of new admissions for children between the age group of 0-17 has gone up by 0.23% on May 13th as detected by their COVID data tracker.

The tracker also showed that the vaccination among eligible children has remained the same with the initial dosage count going down by 40,000. However, among children between the age of 12-17, the numbers have increased to 37,000 from the initial count of 29,000 as reported by AAP in their weekly vaccination report.
