Findings published in the journal Kidney International Reports stated that consuming two to three cups of coffee daily significantly lowered the risk of acute kidney injury.

Participants who consumed any amount of coffee daily had an 11% lower risk of acute renal injury than those who did not. The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study included 14,207 adults who were evaluated with a mean age of 54 years for the cohort. 17% of the participants drank more than 3 cups of coffee per day, 23% drank 2-3 cups per day, 19% drank 1 cup per day, 14% drank less than 1 cup per day, and 27% never drank coffee.

White participants, those without diabetes, smokers, men, and those with normal blood pressure, as well as those with a higher daily total energy intake and a lower body mass index (BMI), consumed more coffee. The findings also revealed that people who drink more coffee have a lower risk of acute renal injury than those who never drink coffee.

Researchers concluded that higher coffee consumption was linked to a reduced risk of incident AKI, suggesting that dietary changes may be used to preserve cardiorenal health. Further research into the physiological mechanisms behind coffees cardiorenal beneficial benefits is required.
