Acne vulgaris is a chronic disease which presents as whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, papules and cysts. Acne vulgaris can be caused by irregular keratinization of the sebaceous canal, bacterial colonization (Cutibacterium acnes), enhanced sebum production, genotypic characteristics and hormonal disturbances.

Its treatment is usually lengthy and tiresome, which can cause a decline in quality of life and social isolation. The intestinal microbiota is greatly implicated in the appearance of acne lesions and is also accountable for the appropriate immunity of the individual.

Acne can be linked to the condition of the digestive tract and its microbiome. Research suggests the utility of probiotics in reducing skin eruptions.

With the rapid growth of probiotic supplementation and cosmetics markets, the use of internal supplementation and probiotic-containing cosmetics may improve, which would further benefit the skin condition of people with acne.
