A prospective cohort study indicated that cochlear implantation was advantageous over hearing devices for young children with deafness and early development impairment (EDI).

Young children who suffered from deafness were selected and enrolled in the study, which was split into three groups. Children in Group 1 (n = 138) had cochlear implantation and had normal cognition and adaptive behaviour. Children in group 2 (n = 37) had low cognitive and adaptable behaviour and had cochlear implantation, while children in group 3 (n = 29) received hearing aid treatment and had low cognition and adaptive behaviour.

Group 2 was considered the control group. It was observed that the group 1 exhibited better results and benefits in cognitive, adaptive function, language, and auditory skills (estimated coefficients, 0.166 to 0.403; P.001), whereas group 3 had slower gains (0.119 to 0.243; P.04) and a higher Parenting Stress Index (PSI; 1.328, 95 % CI 0.208-2.448, P=0.02) and a higher Parenting Stress Index (PSI; 1.328, 95 % CI 0.208-2.448, P=0.0 In groups 1 and 2, the PSI did not differ.

The outcomes of the study were published in Pediatrics and concluded that children with deafness and developmental delays benefit from cochlear implantation. (MedPage Today May 24, 2022)
