CNS Update: Effectiveness of Pregabalin Treatment for Neuropathic Pain in Patients with Spine Diseases: A Pooled Analysis of Two Multicenter Observational Studies
Neuropathic pain (NeP) is common among patients with chronic pain associated with spine diseases.
A study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of pregabalin in patients with chronic NeP associated with spine disease.
This pooled analysis included data from two, eight-week prospective observational cohort studies of patients with low-back pain with and lower limb pain (NeP component), and those with chronic cervical pain along with an upper limb radiating pain (NeP component) in routine primary care settings in Japan. All included patients either received eight weeks of pregabalin (alone/with other analgesics) or usual care with conventional analgesics (like NSAIDs).
Overall, 700 patients were selected, of which 302 were given pregabalin. All patient-reported outcomes (PRO) scores exhibited greater improvements in the pregabalin group after eight weeks, compared to the usual care group, irrespective of the primary diagnosis.
It was inferred that patients with chronic NeP from various spine diseases gained multi-faceted benefits from pregabalin treatment in the "real-world" practice.
