Data Shows More Men Died Due To Covid-19

According to the report on Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD), COVID-19 infection killed more men in comparison to women in 2020. The report released by the Office of Registrar General of India claimed that 1.60 lac deaths were registered in 2020 with 8.9% of the total certified deaths accounting for respiratory infection. The report highlighted the disparity between the death toll of both genders with 1.14 lac men (9.8%) and 46 thousand women (7.1%) killed respectively.

The report also showed that among all the states and UTs, Maharashtra recorded the highest percentage of medically certified COVID deaths with 17.7%. The death toll was followed by Manipur (15.7%), UP (15%), Himachal Pradesh (13.5%), Uttarakhand (12.8%), and Andhra Pradesh (12%) respectively. However, no certified deaths due to infection were registered in Arunachal Pradesh and Lakshadweep in 2020.

In 2020, COVID -19 was the third leading cause of death with the diseases of the circulatory system (5.80 Lac) followed by, diseases of the respiratory system (1.81 Lac) being the first two leading causes of death respectively. However, in the age group of 55-64 years, COVID-19 was the second leading cause of death (11.1%) preceded by diseases of the circulatory system accounting for 36.3% of deaths.
