IIM Ahmedabad conducted a study on menstrual hygiene focusing on the impact of the government-mandated lockdown across different zones on the period product consumption for menstruating women in India. The results of the study showed that the pandemic and related lockdown had severely affected the access to menstrual products for menstruating females, especially in low and middle-income countries.

Even before the pandemic, a gap prevailed in the provisioning of period products and sufficient sanitation facilities to fulfill menstrual needs. However, this was further exacerbated during the pandemic.

AS per the World Bank’s estimates, more than 800 million women menstruate on a daily basis at the global level. However, 500+ females do not have access to menstrual products as well as enough facilities for maintaining and managing menstrual hygiene.
