ICMR Data: Bhopal at Number One for Tongue Cancer

ICMR- National Cancer Registry Programme released their recent finding on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day. As per the data, six in every ten cases of cancer account for tongue and lung malignancy in Bhopal.  

The data compiled in “Report of Cancer sites Associated with Tobacco Use in India: Findings from the National Cancer Registry Programme” showed a higher incidence rate of tongue cancer among women i.e., 4.1 per lakh. While among men, Madhya Pradesh placed second for cancer of mouth with 15.9 per lakh incidences. State cancer nodal officer, Dr. Atul Srivastava pointed out chewing and smoking tobacco as the primary cause of the cancers.

Consumption of tobacco is associated with at least 25 diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, COPD, etc. ICMR officials stated that more data is being compiled, delayed by the pandemic which will provide a deeper insight into the effects of the ban on tobacco mixed gutka.
