During pandemic times, diabetes has hit people disproportionately. In a recent ICMR report, the prevalence and burden of diabetes were reported to have reached a comparable level in urban-rural communities. It also reported that T1D has surged among kids below 14 years of age with approximately, 15900 fresh cases diagnosed in children of this age group every day. This has brought the estimated number of people suffering from T1D to 2.5 lac in India.

Following the surging numbers, ICMR has released guidelines for T1D which include an intensive management framework for all aspects of diabetes such as blood glucose control, use of insulin and other therapies, and disabling complication due to illness.

In India, a considerable variation in diabetes care exists owing to various factors such as accessibility to services, affordability of drugs, attitude perceptions of care-provider, lack of specialists, standardized laboratories, treatment guidelines, and diabetes educators. Hence, ICMR type 1 diabetes guidelines can be adapted as a comprehensive document providing advice on the care of diabetes in children, adolescents, and adults.
