Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have been shown to be beneficial for patients with heart failure (HF) irrespective of their left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the presence of diabetes mellitus.

A new systematic review and meta-analysis published in Pharmacological Research assessed the impact of SGLT2is on cardiac function indices.

This study entailed a systematic literature search, which selected 32 studies including 2,351 patients. The results showed that SGLT2 inhibition led to significant improvements in the LVEF of HF patients. These patients also showed an increase in the global longitudinal strain (GLS) and a decrease in the left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV). Furthermore, left ventricular mass index (LVMi), left atrial volume index (LAVi), and mitral annular early diastolic velocity (E/e) markedly declined with this drug.

Hence, the use of SGLT2is aided in improving the the markers of cardiac function. The findings confirmed the importance of SGLT2 inhibition towards the reversal of cardiac remodeling.
