The efficacy of preoperative oral pregabalin for anxiety control, its most effective dosage regimen, impact on postoperative pain, and adverse effects were determined in a study.

The literature was searched and analyzed, and 12 high quality randomized controlled trials were selected. It was found that a dose of 75 mg preoperative oral pregabalin reduced anxiety and stabilized intraoperative hemodynamics, however, a single dose of 150 mg pregabalin at least 1 h before the surgery rendered more significant improvement without any severe adverse effects.

Thus, Preoperative administration of oral pregabalin in a single dose of 150 mg is effective in reducing the patients anxiety, intraoperative hemodynamic changes as well as postoperative pain. Thus pregabalin can be safely used for preoperative and intraoperative anxiety control in patients undergoing surgery.
