Findings from new research indicated that prediabetes was a crucial independent risk factor for heart attacks. Among 1.79 million patients who suffered a heart attack and were admitted to hospitals, 1% of the patients were prediabetic and 25% had an increased risk of a heart attack compared to those without prediabetes, after correcting various risk factors for heart disease.

These results were revealed in a presentation at ENDO 2022 (the Endocrine Society′s annual meeting)

An additional 45% more threat of undergoing percutaneous intervention and almost double chances of heart bypass surgery were also seen among those who were prediabetic.

Based on their findings, the experts advised people with prediabetes to make lifestyle adjustments, eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly for at least  2.5 hours every week to reduce the hazard of coronary heart attacks. Also, early detection of prediabetes through screening and early intervention was required to lower the risk of cardiovascular events. (Hindustan Times, Jun 12, 2022)
