A new article published in Jama Network Open showed that over 1 lac adults put down the same amount of weight as a result of stay-at-home orders. According to the researchers, quite a lot of individuals gained weight, but many others avoided the temptation to turn lockdowns into open season on their waistline. Dr. Rena Wing, PhD., Weight Control and Diabetes Research Centre, Mariam Hospital stated that though people gained weight during lockdown but over about a year most of the individuals returned to their regular weight.

Dr. Wing and her colleagues used the electronic health record for over 1 lac individuals treated at the University of Pittsburg, to gather information about weight, Body Mass Index, race and ethnicity. The total acquired data included 64% of women, 8% of black individuals, and 90% non-Hispanic population. From the analyzed data, it was found that between January 2018 and March 2020, the participants gained an average weight of 0.18 kg. However, between March 2020 and November 2021, the participants gained an average of 0.22 kg i.e., a marked increment of 0.04 kg.

On the other hand, the team claimed that the data cannot be generalized to all adults since the data was taken from individuals seeking medical care, who might have other issues affecting their weight.
