Six-Year-Old Underwent a Successful Kidney Transplant

A six-year-old boy who suffered an acute kidney injury possibly from a snakebite underwent a kidney transplant at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) with his 32-year-old mother as a donor. 

A multidisciplinary medical team from the Departments of Nephrology, Urology, Vascular Surgery, and Anesthesia of the RGGGH along with the Department of Nephrology from the Children′s Health Institute were involved in the child′s treatment. According to doctors, the boy suffered an acute kidney block caused by snakebite. Initially, he was treated elsewhere, however, the doctors there stated that the kidney injury was a big problem with varying degrees of involvement.

Hence, Almost a month and a half ago he was brought to RGGGH for treatment and underwent a kidney transplant as decided by the hospital team. Following the successful transplant, a leading doctor stated that kidney transplantation in children has its own set of challenges such as differences in blood vessel size between adults and children. He also added that although children′s immune systems are strong; their risk of rejection is higher compared to adults.
