According to a recent study in the journal Aging and Mental Health, dementia risk may be higher in older persons with untreated vision problems. In order to improve a persons quality of life and possibly slow down or stop memory loss, it was recommended that detecting and treating eye disorders may be helpful.

Whether the visual impairment was self-reported or identified by objective tests, the researchers discovered that patients with vision issues were more likely to have cognitive decline and dementia. People who had a sight issue were 137 % more likely to have a cognitive impairment than those who did not. Comparing individuals with and without eye issues, those with sight issues had a 44 % higher chance of developing dementia and a 41 % higher risk of developing cognitive impairment.

Experts stressed the significance of routine eye exams for seniors, which would allow for the early detection and treatment of any potential visual issues. They advised people to pay attention to any self-reported alterations in their vision. More research was necessary to better understand the effects of treating older persons vision issues as well as to avert cognitive issues and dementia. (Hindustan Times, Jun 25, 2022)
