A study presented at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Congress in Austria showed that COVID 19 positive outpatients were at higher risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Ischemic stroke in comparison to subjects who tested negative for the virus.

The study included 9.1 lac individuals from the Danish registry, out of which, 43,000+ people who tested positive for COVID 19 had a 3. 5 times increased risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Similar patterns were seen for Parkinson’s, Ischemic stroke, and intracerebral hemorrhage with an increase in risk factors by 2.6 times, 2.7 times, and 4.8 times respectively.

The researchers stated that neuroinflammation may contribute to the accelerated development of Neurodegenerative disorders, however, long COVID also plays an important role in the same.
