Doctors at KIMS Hospital performed rare surgery on two Iraqi girls with scoliosis problems. The two sisters, aged 14 and 17, had spine deformities with the upper body swinging away from the trunk, difficulty in walking, difficulty in breathing, back pain, and a distorted physical appearance with a significant hunched back deformity. The doctors identified that both of them have a complex type of congenital spinal deformity with multiple fused vertebral bones and ribs, which causes pressure on the lungs and heart, which characteristically progresses rapidly with age.

Finally, the parents brought their two daughters to KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad to consult with Dr. Suresh Cheekatla, an expert in the field of corrective surgeries for spinal deformities, and the state-of-the-art medical facilities like O-arm, neuro monitoring, spinal navigation, etc.

Both the children underwent x-rays, whole-spine CT scans, and MRI tests, and were diagnosed with congenital dorsal kyphoscoliosis, while one of them had a spinal cord malformation. Following the confirmed diagnosis, Dr. Suresh Cheekatla, the consultant spine surgeon at KIMS Hospital, explained that with the help of intra-operative neuro monitoring, his team was able to correct the spine curvature as much as possible without putting pressure on the spinal cord or causing any problems. The surgery was performed with the support of a team led by anesthesiologist Dr. Naresh Kumar. After correcting the deformity, they checked for signals from the spinal cord with the help of intra-operative neuro monitoring and found them to be normal.
