A recent study analysed the patient safety profile of using escitalopram in its different authorised indications along with determining, and evaluating the potential risk (if any), from a review of epidemiological data. The primary emphasis of the safety monitoring approach is the collection, compilation, evaluation and informing of the risk-benefit profile of the drug.

Characterization of escitalopram indications was investigated from various cases reported in diverse literature sources and was discussed regarding their epidemiology, pathophysiology and risk factors. Effects of each indication in different populations were identified. The occurrence of incidence with existing medical history was also analysed. Internal body parts or chemical factors causing those indications were discussed. The general cause of driving these indications was identified. Further, the safety concern with an identified risk of escitalopram was analysed from The Co-ordination Group for Mutual recognition and Decentralised procedures – human (CMDh) and the essential safety concerns were described.

Founded on the review of available information, escitalopram showed a positive benefit-risk profile in all its approved indications. Routine risk minimization efforts which include collecting, processing and assessing the individual cases of escitalopram adverse events are deemed sufficient to scrutinise the benefit-risk profile of escitalopram.

Thus, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, escitalopram is one of the most effective and well-tolerated medicines for depressed patients.
