A study published in the journal "Aging and Health Research" showed that adults who experienced physical abuse as children were more likely to experience chronic pain and chronic physical illnesses in later life. The study also showed that people who had not experienced any trauma had a two-fold increased risk of developing depression and anxiety disorders. The physical illnesses that were mentioned in the study included diabetes, cancer, migraine, arthritis, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The link between childhood abuse and poor physical and mental health was found to be consistent, even after income, education, smoking, binge drinking, and other causes of poor health were taken into account.

Dr Esme Thomson, University of Toronto, stated that childhood physical abuse has an impact on several physiological functions, including the dysregulation of systems that regulate the bodys response to stress. This disrupted system leads to an abnormal increase in the level of cortisol in the body, leading to physical and mental illness.
