A group of scientists has developed a bio-functional thermogel to prevent retinal scarring caused by failed retinal detachment repair surgery. The study published in the journal ‘Nature’ showed that Proliferative vitreoretinopathy occurs when the retinal scarring prevents the retina from healing and falling back into its original place. The study showed that it is a common occurrence in more than 75% of failed retinal detachment surgeries and may result in loss of vision or blindness if not treated properly.

The study highlighted the potential of using synthetic polymers to modulate cellular behaviors. It offered a novel thermogel-based therapy to prevent scarring. In a trial conducted using retinal cells, the team observed that the thermogel prevented the development of scar membranes. The study also showed that the thermogel activated a protein called nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor to kickstart a series of chemical reactions to prevent scarring.

Dr. Su Xinyi, Senior Principal Investigator, stated that this new synthetic polymer challenges the conventional belief that a small molecular drug is needed to have an effective therapeutic effect. Dr. Su also added that beyond ophthalmology, the polymer can be used for treating other disease conditions such as intra-articular joint scarring, etc.  The thermogel is currently being marketed by Vitreogel Innovations Inc., an A*STAR spin-off that focuses on developing polymer base therapeutics for ophthalmology conditions.
