In a new report published on Friday, the World Health Organization and UNICEF stated that 25 million children failed to get a vaccination against Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP). DTP vaccination is a marker for childhood immunization coverage, that showed a continuing downward trend that began in 2019.

UNICEF’s Executive Director, Dr. Catherine Russell stated that this was the largest sustained drop in childhood immunization in a generation, adding that the consequences will be measured in the lost lives. The data showed that the vast majority of the children who failed to get their vaccination were living in developing countries, including Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and the Philippines. Several experts are stating that the drop in vaccination coverage is occurring with a severe rise in the rate of malnutrition. Malnourished children have weaker immune systems and even a small infection like measles can often lead to fatality.

Dr. Davis Elliman, Consultant Pediatrician, at Ormond Street Hospital for Children, stated that it is crucial to reverse the declining vaccination trend among children. He also added, "Whether we act based on ethics or enlightened self-interest, we must put children at the top of the list of priorities”.
