A new study found that 23% of the people infected with Covid would be the “long haulers” of the symptoms. According to the WHO, long COVID is defined as symptoms that last for 12 weeks or more. The study also identified predictors for individuals who were likely to develop symptoms that can last for months. In the study, obesity, and hair loss were identified as predictors of long COVID at the time of infection, whereas, other underlying conditions such as diabetes, and smoking status had no correlation with long-lasting symptoms.

The research published in the ‘Scientific Reports’ used an internet-based national survey and interviewed 308 infected, non-hospitalized individuals one month before, around the time of infection, and 12 weeks later. After accounting for pre-existing symptoms, 23% of the patients reported new-onset of symptoms, such as headache (22%). runny or stuffy nose (19%), abdominal discomfort (18%), fatigue (17%), and diarrhea (13%) respectively.

The researchers observed that the odds of experiencing long COVID were high if, at the time of infection, the individuals were obese, experiencing hair loss, headache, and a sore throat. Unexpectedly, the odds of experiencing chest congestion were low among the people suffering from long COVID.
