Children face major mental issues in observation homes

According to a study by researchers at the University of Mysore, data gathered from various states undertaking the same survey showed that one in every seven youngsters living in children′s homes, observation facilities, or special homes for juveniles has mental health issues.

Data disclosed that children in observation homes experienced incidences of about 50% conduct disorder, 50% attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD, 44% apprehension, 77% neurosis, 33% emotional disturbance, 75% oppositional defiant disorder, and 50% adjustment disorders.

The survey also showed that teenage children faced different behavioral difficulties, including 61% of peer issues, 44% temper issues, 50%), poor social skills, 72% instances of suicidal thoughts, 45% hyperactivity, and 50% violent conduct. Researchers discovered the same mental health issues among residents of children′s homes and special homes, although in varying percentages.

Experts stressed the importance of identifying the children′s mental health issues and offering proper counseling before referring the children to more advanced medical facilities for treatment. Additionally, the government and the department of women and child welfare are putting a lot of emphasis right now on the idea of welfare houses, where kids can stay in a cozy environment and receive support and care.
