According to new research published in Pediatrics, developing a bedtime routine with a consistent 10 hours of sleep at night for toddlers helps in preparing them for the transition to first-time schooling. The study also associated the bedtime routine with the increased ability of children to adapt and adjust during the school-time transition. A team of researchers led by Dr. Doug Teti, Professor, Human Development and Family Studies, Psychology and Pediatrics, Head of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, stated that in addition to an easier adjustment to kindergarten, children who sleep at least 10 hours per night regularly demonstrated a successful development in the emotional quotient, learning engagement, and academic achievement. The findings of the study suggested that "making up" for a lack of sleep at night by taking naps during the day does not help children adjust to school. However, the findings also showed that for children who are about to begin formal schooling, bedtime hours have the greatest impact on a childs transition to and success in kindergarten.

Based on the study findings, Dr. Teti advised families with children who are starting kindergarten to establish routines and expectations for healthy sleep hygiene even before school begins. He also suggested that parental involvement and presence during children′s bedtimes can help in implementing a consistent calming bedtime routine to help children prepare for sleep.
