  • An earlier study had shown that moderate-intensity physical activity and exercise lowered major mobility-related issues among sedentary older adults.
  • A new study has reported that physical activity intervention also slowed the decline of kidney function.
  • In the study on older adults, an exercise intervention led to a decrease in the chance of rapid eGFR decline significantly by 21%.

o The effect was most pronounced in individuals without cardiovascular disease.

  • In the LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders) trial, 1199 adults with mobility limitations were assigned to moderate-intensity physical activity or a health education workshop.
  • Over 2 years, the physical activity and exercise intervention brought about a mean 0.96 mL/min/1.73 m2 less decline in eGFR compared with the health education workshop.
  • Patients with 3470 steps or more showed an approximately 2 mL/min/1.73 m2 slower decline in eGFR.
