Doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bathinda, Jodhpur, Gorakhpur, and Rishikesh have suggested that it is time to focus on hypertension treatment to control the exponential rise in the stroke burden. In India, the incidence of stroke ranges from 116 to 163 people per 100,000 people. Studies have revealed that the increasing prevalence of hypertension can lead to poor prognoses and higher mortality in stroke patients.

Dr. Surender Deora, Senior Cardiologist, AIIMS Jodhpur, stated that poor control of high blood pressure is the reason behind the majority of ischemic stroke cases. He added that stroke is a massive public health burden because up to 50% of the survivors remain disabled for the rest of their lives.

According to a study on stroke epidemiology in India, the incidence of stroke in South Asian countries has increased by more than 100% in the last four decades. AIIMS Bathinda, Jodhpur, Gorakhpur, and Rishikesh have come together to raise awareness and provide leadership in keeping hypertension treatment an issue of national importance.
