Several experts in pulmonology have observed a direct connection between sleep apnea and COVID, with some of them suggesting that the disorder has been a common post-COVID symptom. Experts have warned that the disorder, which causes a lack of oxygen supply to vital organs, can result in brain stroke and cardiac ailment. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by the collapsing of the upper respiratory airways that reduce the airflow breathed into the lungs. The restriction of the upper respiratory pathway leads to a reduction in the amount of oxygen supplied to the vital organs from the lungs.

In a review paper published in the Indian Journal of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Arup Kumar, a pulmonologist at Woodlands Hospital and lead author of the study, explained the link between the two conditions. He has written that the inflammation of certain pathways caused by COVID is already activated by the pre-existing conditions of OSA, thereby increasing the severity of the COVID infection.

Dr. Nandini Biswas, Pulmonologist, Medica Superspecial, stated that in chronic long-standing conditions like OSA, characterized by nocturnal under-breathing, the severity of COVID is naturally worse. She added that several medical studies have also revealed that COVID can affect sleeplessness.
