A study published in the Journal of Future Foods showed that plant-based nutritional substitutes for animal products are healthier for both the environment and people. The new study argued that plant-based supplements are specifically formulated to replicate the taste, texture, and overall eating experience of animal products. Hence, these substitutes are a more effective method for reducing demand for meat and dairy products than simply encouraging people to cook vegetarian whole foods.

The review examined 43 studies on the health and environmental impacts of plant-based foods as well as consumer attitudes. One study revealed that almost 90% of the consumers who ate plant-based meat and dairy were meat eaters or flexitarians. Another study found that plant-based products with similar taste, texture, and price to processed meat had the best chance of replacing meat. The paper also found that these plant-based products cause lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions. A third study found that compared to beef burgers, plant-based burgers were associated with up to 98% fewer greenhouse emissions.

Dr. Chris Bryant, of the University of Bath, stated that plant-based meat and dairy help reduce weight and build muscle mass and could be used to help people with specific health conditions. He added that food producers may also add ingredients such as edible fungi and microalgae to plant-based foods to boost properties such as amino acids, vitamin B, vitamin E, and antioxidants. He added that further innovations are needed in the process of nutritional improvements.
