According to a study published in Diabetologia, time-restricted eating has demonstrated weight loss and lower blood glucose levels in overweight older people with type 2 diabetes. Time-restricted eating, which is a form of intermittent fasting, has shown significant benefits in both animal and human studies.

The study included a small population of 14 overweight and obese type 2 diabetes patients. The study showed that a time-restricted eating window of 10 hours improved both the amount of time spent in a healthy glycemic range and fasting glucose compared to 14 hours eating window. Dr. Lucy Chambers stated that the findings of the study have shown that levels of glycogen would be lower following time-restricted eating. She also suggested that lower glucose availability can improve insulin sensitivity due to an increased need to replenish glycogen stores.

She further added that the researchers fitted the participants with a glucose monitoring device for a 3-week trial period, which measured blood glucose every fifteen minutes. Based on the data collected from the glucose monitoring device, the researchers found that there was no reduction in the glycogen stores in the liver following time-restricted eating. However, they did find that the overall time in a healthy glycemic range increased by approximately three hours a day. They also found that the fasting glucose was lower when the participant’s eating was restricted to a 10 hours window.
