As per the Supreme Courts directive, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has permitted Indian students who returned to India from Ukraine and China to appear in the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) Examination. But the NMC has only allowed students in the last year of their undergraduate medical course who had to leave their foreign medical universities and return to India due to COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, etc.

But now, students studying in other years of their undergraduate medical courses are also demanding that the Union government accommodate them in Indian medical colleges. In pursuance of the Supreme Court order, on July 28, 2022, NMC ordered the Indian students in the last year of their ungraduated programs who returned from Ukraine and China and subsequently completed their studies via their respective institutes on or before June 30, 2022, to be permitted to appear in the FMG examination. Also, these students must have a certificate of completion of the course/degree by their respective institutes to appear for the exam.

The Medical Commission also stated that upon qualifying for the FMG examination, such foreign medical graduates are required to undergo a ‘Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI)’ for two years to make up for the clinical training that they could not physically attend during the undergraduate medicine course in the foreign institute to familiarise them with the practice of medicine under Indian conditions.
