A study published in the journal The Lancet suggested that one in eight COVID-19 patients develops long-term COVID symptoms. According to the study, adults who were infected with COVID-19 experienced at least one new or severely increased symptom of the infection in 3-5 months post-infection compared to before infection.

21.4% of the patients experienced long-term COVID symptoms in comparison to 8.7% of uninfected people in the same period. This suggests that 12.7% of COVID-19 patients experienced long-term symptoms due to COVID-19 in comparison to the general population. The study also looked at the symptoms in both before and after COVID infection scenarios and found that the symptoms included chest pain, difficulties in breathing, pain while breathing, muscle aches, loss of taste and smell, tingling extremities, a lump in the throat, and general tiredness.
