The Kerala Health Department has established a Body Mass Index (BMI) unit at the Health Directorate here as part of its comprehensive efforts to aid in the fight against lifestyle disorders among various age groups.

The unit, which assists in determining body weight, and height, and calculates the BMI, has been set up on a trial basis. According to Health Minister Veena George, BMI is an internationally recognized screening technique, and the newly established unit will assist people in determining their fitness levels.

She stated that if the project was successful, BMI units will be set up in all institutions, factories, and workplaces throughout the state.

She further added that people might take preventive actions after evaluating their fitness and calculating BMI using such units. She listed mental stress, poor eating habits, and a lack of a proper diet as some of the reasons that lead to lifestyle disorders.

All adults over 30 are being checked by health officials visiting their homes across the state as part of the Health Department′s extensive efforts to battle lifestyle diseases. She added that the BMI unit to perform self-assessments of fitness was put up as part of the purpose and that the department offers free diagnosis and treatment to individuals who require it. Over 8.50 lakh people have been screened at home for lifestyle diseases in the six weeks since the campaign′s commencement.(ETHealthWorld, August 12, 2022)
