A new study published in the journal Neurology reveals that indulging in leisure activities such as reading a book, doing yoga, and spending time with family can cut down the risk of developing dementia. The meta-analysis involved a review of 38 studies from across the world, including a total of 2 million people who did not develop dementia. The study showed that people who engaged in leisure activities had a 17% lower risk of developing dementia than those who did not engage in them.

The study of mental activity mainly consisted of intellectual activities and included reading or writing for pleasure; watching television; listening to the radio; playing games or musical instruments; etc. They found that people who participated in these mental activities had a 23% lower risk of developing dementia. Similarly, 17% of the people who engaged in physical activity showed a reduction in their risk of dementia. Physical activities include walking, running, swimming, cycling, yoga, and dancing. On the other hand, social activities, i.e., activities that involved communication with others and included attending a class, joining a social club, volunteering, etc., reduced the risk by 7%.

Dr. Lin Lu, of Peking University Sixth Hospital, China, stated that leisure activities can reduce the risk of dementia. He added that the study emphasizes the benefits of being active and that there are plenty of activities that can be easily incorporated into daily life that can have a positive impact on brain health.
