A study published in The Lancet documented the first case of a dog with a confirmed monkeypox virus infection that might have been acquired through human transmission. The French researchers from Sorbonne University recorded the case of the monkeypox virus in two men who had sex with other men. Twelve days after the onset of monkeypox symptoms, their male Italian greyhound, with no previous medical disorders, tested positive for the virus.

The dog showed symptoms such as mucocutaneous lesions, including red, tender bumps with white pus on the abdomen and an anal skin ulcer. The researchers sequenced the monkeypox virus DNA collected from the dog and its owners. They found that the sample contained a virus of the hMPXV-1 clade, lineage B.1. Lineage B.1 is the West African clad that has been spreading in non-endemic countries since April. The research team added that the dog’s skin and mucosal lesion tested positive for monkeypox virus in both anal and oral swabs.

Hence, it can be hypothesized that the canine is not a simple carrier of the virus acquired by close contact with humans or airborne transmission (or both).
