An article published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology described evolutions in the facial rejuvenation strategies that now address aging-related changes in each anatomical layer of the face. The authors stated that understanding the impacts of aging on different tissue layers of the face can help in delivering more targeted and refined hyaluronic acid (HA filler) treatments through injectors.

Presently, filler use has gained prevalence, and skin and superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) lifts are chosen less frequently. Through an injector, the anatomical facial layers can be precisely targeted with HA fillers for gaining the desired results.

Further, HA fillers are now available in a wide range of variants – each targeting specific tissue planes. The choice of fillers should be governed by thorough knowledge of the aging-related changes in the layers of facial tissues and the predictable age-related alterations. Additionally, the properties of each HA-based product must be studied in detail for achieving better outcomes and for lowering the risk of adverse events.
