The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has set retail prices for 45 prescription formulations, including the two anti-diabetic medications Linagliptin Metformin Combination and Sitagliptin-Metformin Combination, underprice restriction.

After Merck Sharp and Dohme′s (MSD) patent on Sitagliptin expired last month, some 40 companies have already announced or are planning to launch their generic versions of the drug. The NPPA aims to give consumers access to the advantages of price reduction. Sitagliptin and Metformin combo pills are now available for Rs. 16–21 per tablet instead of Rs. 345 for a blister pack (containing 15 tablets).

The cost of the Linagliptin-Metformin combo, which is scheduled to go off patent next year, has similarly decreased from Rs. 16 to Rs. 25 per tablet. The cost of a tablet containing Linagliptin-metformin in 2.5 mg and 5 mg dosages has been set at Rs.  16.17 and Rs. 25.33, respectively.

According to Dr. Anoop Misra, chairman of Fortis CDoc, roughly 30% of people with type-II diabetes are administered gliptin medications like Sitagliptin, Linagliptin, Vildagliptin, etc. These medications are more popular due to their ability to lower blood sugar levels, are almost devoid of adverse effects, and do not result in hypoglycemia, making them more apt for the elderly. Diabetes patients will profit from the decision, he added.

On August 24, the NPPA received a notification regarding the price. Additionally, the NPPA has also fixed the retail price of a tablet containing acetaminophen, phenylephrine hydrochloride, caffeine, and diphenhydramine hydrochloride used to treat cold symptoms, at Rs 3.73.
