In the initial study stage, IIPH Gandhinagar (IIPH-G) in Ahmedabad discovered a non-laboratory-based screening method to evaluate a persons 10-year risk of acquiring cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and was  found to be 85% accurate in the Indian setup.

According to Dr. Komal Shah, a biomedical scientist, the preliminary results of the study increase the likelihood that the "Framingham risk assessment tool" will be adopted as a practical and affordable alternative for widespread screening of patients for CVDs in a resource-constrained nation like India.

The program evaluates the likelihood based on variables including sex, age, Body Mass Index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, and risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, and smoking. Dr. Shah added that cholesterol is a poor predictor of cardiac risk in Indians.

Further, Dr. Shah claims they are currently examining the best way to create a tool for India that can assess the risk of CVD without needing a laboratory setup or trained personnel. The eventual goal of the study is to provide frontline staff with this tool so they can identify folks over 30 who are in the high-risk group.(Times of India, Sep 5, 2022)
