Govt to initiate study on the safety of vaccine in pregnant women at antenatal clinic

The National Technical Advisory Group of Immunization recommended that the union health ministry allow pregnant women to receive the COVID-19 vaccination in July of last year.

 

Around 960 million doses have been given to women, according to the CoWIN portal managed by the National Health Authority. Most women of reproductive age (15-45) have received at least one dose of the covid vaccine.

 

According to an official, there is no proper data on pregnant women who have received vaccinations. In the majority of cases, vaccine clinics may not have recorded information on pregnancy, which results in an underreporting of the vaccination status of pregnant women on the CoWIN platform. So the women visiting antenatal clinics may now be questioned if they have had the COVID-19 vaccine.

 

Although the health ministry′s division that gathers data on adverse occurrences following vaccination might be having the information of about the 2.5–3 million pregnant women recieving vaccinations , yet the data may be inconsistently recorded. Hence with an aim to to determine the percentage of women who have received vaccinations and monitor the safety of the vaccine among pregnant women and their newborns, the government has a proposal to intitalte study at antenatal clinics. 

 

The issue has repeatedly come up in National Technical Advisory Group of Immunization meetings, where concern for the same.(Livemint, 10 Sep 2022)
