According to a team of researchers from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here led by Dr. Rajeev Mishra, fortunellin, a naturally occurring flavonoid molecule, can target several proteins, including those that are involved in the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The research paper titled "Computational exploration of the dual role of the phytochemical fortunellin: antiviral activities against SARS-CoV-2 and immunomodulatory capacities against the host" has been published in the international journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.

Dr. Mishra said that Covid-19 patients exhibited inflammation, multiorgan dysfunction, and respiratory symptoms. Most of the currently available antivirals are ineffective against SARS-CoV-2 because of their innate genetic mutability. Thus, compared to single target approaches, concurrent inhibition of multiple SARS-CoV-2 targets along with inflammation and immunomodulation linked to tissue-specific human targets may be more effective and have a significantly higher therapeutic potential for saving a Covid-19 patient.

Therefore, the researchers looked for a drug molecule that might be used to block several SARS-CoV-2 targets, reduce inflammation and manage immune system regulation. (Times of India, Sep 13, 2022)
