A recent study systematically evaluated the prognostic factors for mortality in bullous pemphigoid by searching PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine disc and Wanfang Database to collect the relevant data.

It assessed the quality of studies by Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale and used other relevant methods to evaluate for bias, etc.

The findings were as follows:

  • The study retrieved 1,546 articles and included 15 studies involving 2,435 patients.
  • The meta-analysis found that the mortality of patients with bullous pemphigoid increased with positive bullous pemphigoid 180 antibody; concomitant dementia; stroke; heart disease and diabetes mellitus.
  • Sex, positive indirect immunofluorescence and hypertension did not affect prognosis.

Thus, positive bullous pemphigoid 180 antibody, dementia, stroke, heart disease and diabetes mellitus are the proven prognostic factors for mortality in bullous pemphigoid.
