Presently India is being battered by dengue and swine flu cases that could spread into an outbreak. The latest numbers from the union health ministry show that the nation has registered more than 30,627 dengue cases with 12 fatalities so far this year as of the end of August.

The highest number of cases has been recorded in Karnataka (5,392), followed by 3,396 cases Tamil Nadu, Telangana reported 2,960 cases, Maharashtra recorded 2,927 instances, while Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat reported (2,309), (2,007), (1,745), (1448) and (1212) cases respectively.

India reported more than 1,455 swine flu instances this year, along with 30 fatalities. All states and UTs must implement surveillance procedures for reporting instances, provide prompt treatment, and be ready to prevent an outbreak, according to a directive from the union health ministry.

Covid-19 and influenza are both contagious respiratory diseases caused by different viruses. Symptoms for both include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. While droplets spread the COVID-19 and H1N1 viruses, mosquitoes are the primary vector for dengue.

Shortness of breath begins in the first week with swine flu, whereas respiratory distress only manifests in the second week with COVID. In the last 24 hours, India reported 4,500 or so instances of COVID.

Under the condition of anonymity, a senior National Center for Disease Control official stated that although there is not a pan-Indian outbreak, several states are already experiencing a spike in dengue and swine flu cases. Extreme rainfall this year in several parts of the nation is the cause of dengue. States are now keeping an eye on the patients independently. The central government is aware of the increase in cases and will send teams as needed. (Livemint, 22 Sep 2022)
