Dr. Rajesh Malhotra, director of the orthopaedics section of AIIMS said that over 2. 5 lakh total knee replacements (TKR) are performed annually in India, which is 2. 5 times more than it was five years ago.

The availability of expertise and infrastructure to perform the procedure, which involves replacing the knee joint with an artificial one, is the most important in driving this growth, he continues. This growth is also being driven by increased longevity, the desire to stay active and fit, and the desire to remain fit.

Dr. Malhotra claims that despite the rise in TKR, there has also been an increase in post-procedure complications and the need for revision surgery.

Surgical-specific causes could include protracted operations that cause significant blood loss and soft tissue harm. Blood sugar levels that are not under control and disregard for post-operative care are two patient-specific causes that may exist.

Another enemy of the knee problems is obesity. With adequate weight management, many patients who are considering TKR may be able to avoid surgery. Additionally, obese patients are more likely to experience surgical and post-surgical difficulties, thus extra caution may be needed in these situations to lower the risk of complications.

Dr. Apurv Mehra, visiting consultant in the orthopaedics division at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj stated that early complications after-TKR might be due to infection or re-trauma. Therefore, its crucial to maintain pre-operative hygiene and to carefully assess the patients vitals, such as their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as their cardiac health.

Dr. J. Maheshwari leading orthopaedic surgeon from the Sitaram Bharatia Institute of Science and Research, advised that treating any post-operative discomfort or swelling was very important  as it indicates infection which can become difficult to treat and also recover if untreated.
