The results of a multicentre, randomized, controlled study showed that the removal of small, asymptomatic kidney stones during surgical procedures to remove ureteral or contralateral kidney stones led to

  • A reduced incidence of relapse compared to non-removal.
  • A reduction in the number of emergency department visits two weeks after the surgery.

It was observed that the restricted mean time to relapse was 75% more in the treatment group than in the control group. However, the risk of relapse was 82% lower in the treatment group than in the control group. It must be noted that the treatment further added a median of 25.6 minutes to the total duration of the surgery.
