The study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association revealed that uncontrolled high blood pressure contributes to many heart-related catastrophes.

In the United States, among the more than 20 million emergency department (ED) visits between 2016 and 2018, roughly one-third of cardiovascular diseases (CVD)-associated ED visits were hypertension-related. Over 2.7 million people, or 13% of all ED visits, were treated for essential hypertension.

The most common causes of ED visits in women were essential hypertension (16%), hypertensive heart or renal disease (14%), and atrial fibrillation (AF)/flutter (10%), while men reported acute myocardial infarction (AMI), essential hypertension (11%), and hypertensive heart or kidney disease (15%) more.

The study also observed that males and women saw slightly different results from emergency CVD visits. Overall, after an ED visit for CVD, women were less likely than males to die (3.3% vs. 4.3%) or be hospitalized (49.1% vs. 52.3%).

The researchers urge more investigation into the underlying causes of the disparities between men′s and women′s CVD patterns and outcomes. People should have their blood pressure tested more frequently since hypertension is a silent killer. (Source: https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/981448?src=)
