The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has developed a nutraceutical product from specific seaweeds to treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as part of its ongoing research on developing natural products from seaweeds and marine organisms that could help fight various lifestyle diseases.

The product, known as CadalminTM LivCure extract, is a unique blend of 100% natural bioactive substances extracted from seaweeds utilizing eco-friendly green technology to improve liver function. This is the seventh such product created by the CMFRI using marine creatures. The other items treat ailments like Type-2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, and to boost immunity. These nutraceuticals comprises of eight seaweed-based products and one green mussel supplement.

Dr Kajal Chakraborty, principal scientist in the marine biotechnology, fish nutrition and health division of the CMFRI, stated that the nutraceutical product was created using bioactive pharmacophore leads from seaweeds. The pre-clinical studies, demonstrated that LivCure extract has the ability to inhibit multiple enzymes and target receptors connected to dyslipidemia and the pathophysiology causing NAFLD. This enhances liver function, lessens fatty material disposition, and keeps other liver/lipid parameters within clinically acceptable ranges.
