On September 29th, the Cardiological Society of India, in collaboration with SATS, a critical care society accredited by the American Health Association, launched a unique initiative to spread awareness about sudden cardiac death resulting from a heart attack. The initiative also aimed to spread knowledge about subsequent emergency aid, i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which can save lives.

The doctors from the CSI believe that knowledge about SCD and CPR is the need of the hour to improve quality of life. According to Dr. Debabrata Roy, Honorary General Secretary, CSI, the rising number of clinical and subclinical cardiovascular diseases in India indicates a large population with vulnerable traits to SCD. Hence, the immediate focus should be on primary and secondary prevention programs; the wider reach of first responders; the timely management of patients; and compliance with evidence-based medicine.

The initiative was launched to reach out to 10 lakh people across India to create awareness regarding SCD, followed by hands-on CPR training for the said population by setting up camps at educational institutions, shopping malls, housing societies, police stations, etc. A virtual learning platform has also been set up to spread awareness through online mediums.
