On Friday, several cardiologists cautioned gym enthusiasts against using Mephenterminesulfate injections to gain more muscle quickly, stating that the compound’s overuse could even lead to death. The warning was issued after 246 sealed vials of the drug were seized by the police and Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) officials on Tuesday.

An FDA official stated that the seizure was the third one this year. The suspect claimed that the drug was prescription-based. The officials added that the regular use of the drug can cause drowsiness, incoherence, hallucinations, convulsions, slow heart rate, vision loss, and even death due to heart attack.

Dr. Abhijit Joshi, consultant in cardiology at Manipal Hospitals, added that the drug is administered by doctors in operation theatres during trauma surgeries to normalize the heartbeat of a patient. In the case of unsupervised and rampant use of the drug, it could lead to death due to a heart attack. The drug causes the heart rate of a person to rise suddenly, making the person feel a sudden rush of energy for a higher workout.
